Professor Kenneth L. Helphand will speak about Defiant Gardens, his award winning book from Trinity University Press about how nurturing plants brought hope in the bleakest of times.  Sukhdev Sandhu of the New Statesman described it as "an incredible and deeply moving history of the ways in which soldiers and civilians, often in the most grievous and immiserated circumstances, have created little pockets of horticultural hope throughout the 20th century: in allied trenches during the First World War, Warsaw ghettoes, Japanese-American internment camps. The photographs alone are extraordinary, but the chronicles of imaginative resistance are almost beyond belief."  It has been recognized by The Oregonian (ten best books of 2007 by Northwest authors), the Foundation for Landscape Studies, American Society of Landscape Architects, and the Environmental Design Research Association.
