After graduating from Grant High School, Loren entered Harvard College with the class of 1955 and had a 3-year interruption in his Harvard College education due to being drafted into the Army. He returned to Harvard to graduate in 1958 and earn an MBA in 1960. Loren was one of the large contingent of outstanding Oregonians recruited by Borden Beck to enter Harvard. He returned to Portland and became a prominent and successful business, financial, and civic leader with great contributions to education and to the arts. His interest in Harvard admissions and Harvard students from this area persisted throughout his life. Jennifer (Jenny), one of his four children, graduated from Harvard in 1987 and later was president of the Harvard Club of Oregon for one year before she moved to Virginia.
One of Loren’s major philanthropies to Harvard was the establishment of the Borden Beck Scholarship Fund for students from the Harvard Club of Oregon area. He was responsible both for making major contributions and soliciting funds for this scholarship fund commemorating his friend Borden Beck.
